Corey has been playing Weiss Schwarz since this summer, and was experiencing burnout from YuGiOh. A friend convinced him to try Weiss Schwarz by telling him “Hey! We just got "Rurouni Kenshin" and "The Eminence in Shadow" coming out soon.” which was more than enough to get him to try out the game. "I've been playing locals at Paul’s Gamerzone and The Warp Gate in Ohio, and the community is so awesome. We had a Summer Soulstice event that was so much fun as well as a lodge trip." As far as other tops, he hasn’t even topped a locals yet, because all of our local players are so strong that it’s really tough. He’s a fierce up and coming Weiss Schwarz competitor though! Now onto the interview!
Melanie Lynette (ML): How did the event go for you? Was there anything specific that you'd like to share from the start?
Corey (C): This was my first regional, and I’ve only been playing Weiss for around 3 months. I was so amazed at how well the tournament was run and how fast it was going with the pairings.
Winning Decklist:
BushiNavi Code: 62ACG

ML: What was your match up and how did Round 1 go for you?
C: I won against The Seven Deadly Sins. It was the Hendrickson deck, which luckily with the recent hits it’s not as scary as before. Shoutout to Sagura for beating me up with Hendrickson when I was learning the game.
ML: What was your match up and how did Round 2 go for you?
C: I won against Goddess of Victory: NIKKE. The opponent was on Modernia / Biscuit and he just couldn’t out tempo infinite Mortis loop.
ML: What was your match up and how did Round 3 go for you?
C: I won against Tokyo Revengers. My opponent was playing the Baji/Mikey clown car finisher. It was a close game. I had to cancel a lot to win.
ML: What was your match up and how did Round 4 go for you?
C: I lost against Rurouni Kenshin 8 Choice. This matchup was against the 8 Choice Trigger Yahiko deck. It’s actually a hard matchup because of how it sets up. It was still a really close game considering I couldn’t light a single combo the whole time.
ML: What was your match up and how did Round 5 go for you?
C: I won against [Oshi no Ko]. I wasn’t really sure what was going on with this deck matchup as I’ve never played against it before. I canceled a lot of damage this game, so I was kind of on autopilot this match after the loss to Kenshin.
ML: What was your match up and how did Round 6 go for you?
C: I won against Nazarick: Tomb of the Undead (Overlord). Based on a 5 second crash course on how to play against Overlord from Elysion, I just tri-laned and jammed a climax every turn until he lost. His setup was still pretty tough to beat even with him going straight to level 2 after triple triggering climaxes on his first turn.
ML: What was your match up and how did Round 7 go for you?
C: I won against That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. This was a pretty good match, but my opponent had a really unfortunate first deck. This let me just tempo him out of the game.
ML: And after deck checks, top cut! How did Top 16 go?
C: I lost against That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. This was pretty much the opposite of Round 7. I had an unfortunate first deck and couldn’t get back into the game.
ML: Congratulations on your accomplishment! Are there any final reflections or shout outs you would like to share?
C: I really have to give all the props to the Ohio Weiss Community. It’s so amazing and welcoming. I already feel like part of a big family and it’s made learning the game so fun. Also, I haven’t topped a locals yet, so I think our locals are tougher than regionals, just saying.
Shoutout to Bushiroad for announcing The Eminence in Shadow to get me into the game! Looking forward to the release! Also, shoutouts to Ohio Weiss, Sagura, Wynter, Elysion, Chan, Aye Aye Ron, and Padding Numbers for holding it down at the bottom.
I think this weekend really reaffirmed the great experience I’ve had with Weiss Schwarz so far and I’m really excited for more to come!

ML: And that concludes our interview with BCS 25/26 Top 16 Player (14th Overall) Corey! A special thanks to Corey for sharing with us! Congratulations to all who topped and good luck at those headed to Worlds in 2026!
